SPIRULINA is a blue-green form of single cell algae that grows in warm, unpolluted alkaline fresh-water bodies. The word "Spirulina" is derived from the latin word "Helix", meaning "spiral". It denotes the image of the organism that forms its swirling, microscopic strands. It is a highly nutritious, microscopic freshwater plant. The algae are differently classified according to their colors which are Blue-Green, Green, Red and Brown. The blue-green Spirulina has both the presence of the Spirulina nowadays are ecologically and organically cultured in large clean ponds. Researches of Spirulina came up with the result that Spirulina has the highest level of all nutrients. It is naturally grown - meaning no chemical pesticides (or herbicides). Preservation without chemical based additives preserves its full nutritional value by just a few seconds of careful drying.
Spirulina is safely manufactured as food supplement. It is considered a Super Food because it has over a hundred nutrients more than any vegetable, herb or grain. Spirulina with the blue-green color contains both Chlorophyll (green) and Phycocyanin (blue) pigments on its cellular structure. Spirulina is surely hygienic because there are no harmful bacteria or organisms will survive to pollute the waters where Spirulina algae are grown due to its hot environment. In fact, spirulina is one of the cleanest, most naturally sterile foods found in nature. Spirulina's one big advantage to other nutritional plants is its high adaptation to heat, it has the ability to surely retain its nutritional value when exposed to high temperatures during processing and shelf storage while other plants gets easily deteriorated.
Spirulina is approximately 70 percent high in protein. They are biologically complete – meaning they provide all the eight essential Amino Acids in proper ratios. Unlike other plant foods, they are incomplete because they easily deteriorate in hot environments and that they lack one or more Amino Acids. Spirulina provides all the required amino acids that is five times easier to digest than any meat or soy proteins. Spirulina supplies ten of the twelve non-essential amino acids, but being non-essential doesn't mean that they are not really needed by the body, just because the body can synthesize itself if needed, provided that the right nutritional building blocks are present. Our body is very much dependent on nutrient intake for all of its functions.
It is said that proteins are the building blocks of life, there are still many trace minerals that can profoundly effect metabolism and health. Changed into natural organic forms by Spirulina, minerals are chelated with amino acids and therefore more easily absorbed and nourished by the body. Accumulation of inorganic minerals block the absorption of the organic forms, that leads to mineral deficiency diseases. This happens when people are ingesting large amounts of inorganic minerals that the body doesn't know what to do with it, thus it is not health beneficial.
More than anything, Spirulina is an essential supplement we should have everyday. It is a valuable food and pure source of nutrition. It is one of the great unharvested pastures on earth.
